Nokia E72 Review

The Nokia E72 is high-performance device specifically designed as business phone, but suits great for personal communication also. nokia e72 review

Of course, the Nokia E72 has got almost the same features as its younger brother Nokia E71 –  Wifi, Bluetooth, HSDPA, UMTS and QWERTY keyboard. If you do not have too thick fingers can easily handle them. Besides these features there is big old camera upgrade implemented, ie 5 megapixels, the camera’s maximum resolution is 2592 x 1944 pixels, unfortunately there is still no optical zoom on this Nokia. The camera is also still not very good at shooting in the dark.

Besides the camera there is an update introduced for better compatibility for fast internet, so fast that within seconds you’re MP3tje download. Yet another funny feature, there is compass in case you ever in Brazilian rainforest gets stuck, your Nokia Maps is also slightly better result.

If you want to watch movie on your E72 without other nearby burden than there is this much easier, because there is standard 3.5mm audio jack to be added so you can plug in standard headphones instead of the usual Nokia small jack.

nokia e72Expectations are that the Nokia E72 as the previous model will be real blockbuster. This model is preliminary in silver and black.

Disadvantages:

  • Camera could be better
  • too few standard built-in memory

Good features:

  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • quick startup time
  • compass

In short

Nokia E72 is smartphone with QWERTY keyboard, worthy successor to the Nokia E71 model. This is complete device from all points of view, is equipped with support for UMTS / GSM Quadband, HSDPA, 2.36-inch display 16 million colors, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, camera 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, secondary camera for video calls, 250MB of internal memory, 4 GB card included, player and FM radio with Visual Radio, Symbian OS S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 and integrated GPS with Nokia Maps.

  1. What the hell are you talking about, Ricky?

It IS Nokia E72. There is even E72 written on the phone if you looked at the pictures more carefully.

  2. and soo is the screen dammit…wish they could just get it right…I dont get the wasted realistate on these things…same goes for the BB Bold, (which I currently use)great phones, both of them..Nokia could have cleaned house with this thing, if they just werent soooo skimpy with the screen size and keyboard space…why dont these manufactures think, think, think….

  3. This phone beats all, 600 Mhz Process, GPS, 3G with 10.1 MBPS (3.5 G) Latest OS, 30 Days Call history, Digital Compass, Maps, 20 Days Battery Life, 5 Day for heavey user, Wifi, 5 MP with Flash, 8 GB Memory free, 16 GB Expendable.

  4. E72 Bad Things:-
    – It does not auto recognise capital alphabet like E71
    – When u type fast it skips some alphabet
    – When u insert a Image in a word sheet it doesnt recognise
    – Whenever u restart ur phone most of the times u lose your email setting.
    – Web browsing is slower than E71
    – You cannot underline or use bold or italic through shortcuts in word like Ctrl U, B, I like E71
    – This phones hangs now and then like a windows based.
    – Contacts shortkey does allow u to add new contact after long hold.
    – Basic Barcode reader is missing.
    – Web Feeds in missing in he bookmark list, u need to go to setting and find it.
    – Mailbox clock switches the date at 12 noon. So u get the mail dated to next date.
    – Memory card in setting is missing which was usefull in E71, like format etc.
    – Nokia has saved it time by not making new O.S. Has used N-Series user interface which does match with the E-Series User Interface.
    – Optical Key not at all usefull
    – The System is so slow that even setting come very slow, and if u try to select things fast then it leaves you back to the home screen including surfing mails.
-Battery Backup is only about 1 and half days, and more worse is that u cannot trust this phone as day 1 it shows full battery, and second day you wont even come to know when it comes from full to drain.
    – Even if Wi-Fi server is not found it still says Hidden Wi-Fi found.
    – In Opera 10 Browser u cannot use ‘U’ it only uses *
    – Even space bar key hangs now and then and to use it we need to restart the phone.

People please tell Nokia to find a way out of all this..

  5. I bought a Nokia E72 on Sunday and during the last 7 days found about 30 problems with it. Sadly, none of them have been solved by Nokia either through the call centre or at the dealer or at the concept store or at the service centre. Having exhausted all reasonable opportunities I would like other folks to avoid buying this handset. During the next days, I will post one by one, the killer defects in the phone.

  6. hey PSR !!!its almost 5 days and u have not posted a single of ur 30 problems.. i had seen ur same post in some some other forum where u have said the same thng… AND mr ALOK stop spamming ur botheration in every possible forum i hve been toO…R u A virus or bot or sometng…
PSR be a man and post ur 30 KILLER DEFECTS which must have been ovEr 100 by nw…

  7. Sorry guys but Alok is right about most of what he mentioned. This phone was released to soon but they could not any longer. If the above problems are not dealt with in the firmware update I will have to get rid of this and back to e71.
Give Alok a break. The man knows what he is talking about.

  8. “Alok” is quit correct at certain point, i dont know about other things but really the OS is too slow as compaired to E71 or E63. E72 being having a 600mhz processor however the new flashbased os sucks big time….its toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow…if it would not had a 600mhz processor i would not have bought it…

  9. Screen is not the problems, it’s the fonts that can’t be increased. Also, the contacts stinks. It doesn’t compare to the Blackberry structure. The calendar is cramped with the to-do-list so it’s too small to view monthly layout.

  10. I got the latest software ( firmware updated ) version 031.023.c00.01

But still there are lots of problems I have even spoken to the care center manager and he did admit there are problems in this

Let me give u the list of problems so if you can help me out in fixing then fine, or please arrange for a replacement.

    1. Whenever I am typing a message few characters are getting missed out as I have an habbit of typing faster and I have never faced this kind of problem from Nokia E71 which I had previously.
    2. Web browser is lot slower than E71 whenever I am opening most of time I can see invalid server name but same when I keep refreshing 2 to 3 times it works
    3. All the time every 2 mins or 3 mins it asks me to choose the network of WLAN I tried to go to settings and scan for WLAN I have said never but inspite the same error repeated times keeps coming.
    4. Optical key doesn’t work when phone is working like when I m speaking to someone on phone I need optical to work it doesn’t work.
    5. I don’t need this effect fade in and fade out it looks due to that lots of time is consuming can something be done to overcome the same.
    6. Whenever I am speaking on phone and I want to message someone then the space doesn’t work at all, all comes in continue characters.
    7. I have configured my email ID using POP3 / SMTP or even IMAP but it doesn’t work at all, but when I have configured Gmail it works well, does it mean that my email id jaswanth@bookandhost.com will not work on Nokia E72, I have configured same format in Nokia E71 and it worked with no issues things were fine enough.
    8. The storage of mails is not becoming possible, there are lots of instances that I keep travelling around and I may even need to store 500 mails on my mobile so that I can answer them as and when I get the things but here the day I see the mail in the morning and in the evening its out of my mobile.
    9. I request you to please provide me a solution to these problems or else please cancel my Nokia e72 and I ll go with my altime favourate Blackberry

  11. Dear All, yesterday i bought Nokia E72.Believe me its not worth to keep in collection.Unfortunately there is no buyback guarantee by Nokia otherwise i could have returned and replace with other handset..Before purchase any handset please check practically with your friend or collegue.try and then purchase…

  12. Hi folks, I share the agony of Mr. Jaswanth esp regarding email set-up. Both Nokia and Airtel are of no help. Someone pls help.

  13. I’ve been using a Nokia E72 since the start of this year and I think many of the problems Alok mentioned is relevant. It gets really annoying sometime and really makes me think if i had actually wasted money, time and energy on this phone. My advice is to give this one a pass. There are certainly many better choices out there, especially with so many phones launched recently. Why get this and regret later on?

  14. Janswath mentioned the waste of time the fade-in effect is, when waking up from the home screen. I had the same problem, but now find that this only happens on the business desktop theme. If I change the theme from business to personal, there is no fade-in and it is much quicker.
I really think that much of what has been said regarding the negatives is due to us not understanding how to use the phone properly. I agreed with some of Alok’s comments initially, but I
now find these no longer apply. It takes a long time to really know phone and the supplied handbook only touches the surface of its capabilities.

  15. I got the latest softwware version 031.023.c00.01. Battery exhaused in 24 hours. After seven day of my purchasing I deposited the battery with Nokia Care Centre. The new phone is lying unused. It does not auto recognise capital alphabet like E71.

  16. nice reading this thread…im thinking of buying this phone…i think i’ll just stick with my E71…

but how about the camera quality of E72? is there a huge difference 3.2mp vs 5mp?

  17. wow! thanks for the advices 🙂 Imma stick with E71 too!

E72 are nice & sexy BUT with all the problems, bye bye E72. E71 is going to be my new baby. tehee..

  18. What alok said is soo true..
Mostly all of the points he mentions have occurred to me in the first day I use this phone.
The functions it has makes up for a lot, but if I could try this phone for a week and then send it back I really would have done that.
(the phone is now 1,5 days in my possession and I am really getting sick of the “big button” reacting double on my presses now and then.
Please do think good about getting this phone.

  19. Guys, all the big reviewers (CNET, PhoneArena, GSMArena) say this is a great phone. Are you guys just the few people with bad phones, or does everyone with this phone just ignore the problems? Seems to me if they sold 1000 of these, and they were all as bad as you guys say – Nokia would have to stop selling the model. Has anyone had a GOOD experience with this phone?

  20. had the fone for 8 months all that Alok noted was true, the firware updates dont fix the problems, nokia has given up on fixing this fone, if you buy it dont pay more than $300, the fone is only good for slow typing people who dont use the net much. cant handle intensity fone will lag or reboot.

  21. Actually the phone is good. Depends on how u using it. As a business phone yes very good indeed.
I have no problem in using Quickoffice, excellent for view MSOffice documents and pdf files.

Camera no so important to me through i do impress with the quality of their output.

Email not problem. Easy to setup POP/MS Exchange, gmail, hotmail (didnt try yahoo X acc)

MSN skype is good. Wifi is impressive compare to other pda and smartphone i come accross. Through the other downside is only u need to set the access in the 1st place or u need to manually select the pointer everytime.

Not sure y some people complain speaker phone when u can use BT headset or probably they want to use it for music or let other people listen to their conversation.

Recent of slow responses is if you installed most of the program in your phone memory. Hence it slow the response rates. That goes to most of the phone as well. I use pda WM2ndE, WM6 all the same. And i AM ABLE to write or type msg or etc when i was talking to ppl on the phone.

Probably wat you need is to properly configure your e72 so as to let it work properly.

  22. I’ve been reviewing this phone for a while…here are my observations:

    1. The keys in the QWERTY board are very congested that you may sometimes get pain in your hands holding it right side to type.
    2. The audio quality is par below the standards. The loud speaker is a disappointment. You can hardly hear if you switched on the loud speaker.
    3. The phone hangs or goes inactive if you switched between applications or games that are processor intensive. You have to restart the phone. Dont be surprised if you had to remove the battery for the restart.
    4. The phone’s push mail is not the regular push mail technology. It uses Nokia’s instant messaging technology. This means you have to get registered with their services to use the IMAP.
    5. A very sluggish processor if you loaded many (atleast 4 to5 ) applications and games. Its not fast enough in some areas like menu switching, etc.
    6. Overall, this phone is good if you used it for just calls, video, music and internet radio. Though the sound quality of the calls are very poor I would say that the music is played good.
    7. The optical navi key is of no use. You dont need that for any reason.

    8. Conclusion – A very costly phone for the features it has. You can get these in a normal multimedia phone. The 5MP camera with LED flash is a addon bonus for this phone. Otherwise, dont even think of this phone. You are better off with E71.

  23. Hi to wannabe owners of Nokia E72. Nokia E72 is a piece of rubbish, poorly designed from system perspective. Don’t buy it! Please NEVER attempt NOR think about buying this piece of Nokia junk. I regret the day I went for this rubbish!

I have been having endless problems with it:
    (1) Poor battery life last after being charged (on standby) about 8hours
    (2) Hangs all the time when you access menu

    Kind regards

  24. I brought it on september 2010.guess i have to agree with some of the unfavourable comments made here abt e72.the phone hangs every now and then, its camera isn’t that gr8 especially indoors but the most i dread is its musicplayers poor voice clarity, especially through the headphones that Nokia provided.one thing i love is its Strong Battery.being a old 6300 user i admire e72s battery…

  25. Had to mention one more thing.nokia does not provides the option 4 silent mode 4 camera.so u cant snap a thing without getting the attenton of everyone around;mute camera software vi r on the net hasn’t helped me so far….

  26. Hey can anyone sugget which phone should i go for the. . . ? ? ?
Coz i’ve an e71 and was thinking to buy an e72. .
    but you guys scared me. . ! ! !

    WHICH PHONE SHOULD I BUY? ? ? ?

  27. I am using E72 since last year and was happy being first buyers. Unfortunately have to confess soon I recognized that E72 is the worst cell I ever had. even in case of simple using the phone (texting, calling, basic apps) the phone hags and freezes.
don think about this phone if u r planning buying it and dont waste ur money and nerve!

  28. I have been using this phone for a month. It hangs a lot while using phone aaplications you may go to the home screen after fadeout or will have to restart.camera very poor, phone speaker very low sound yoy may miss your calls in even little noisy surrounding, audio quality very low bass negligible so you miss on the beats in your fav hiphop track, optical keys a great discomfort when u try to click the center button it will guide you mouse pointer away at times.overall rating 4 out of 10.

  29. Hi guys this is great cell phone
i got it bfore six month
    yet no problem faced
i download more than 300 mb of data daily
and i use it heavily even for viewing tv channels

  30. Have e72 for several months – constantly hanging, several times a week, recently hung during night when I needed alarm to work. Have done hard resets and re-install and as bad as ever. I need a phone, email and alarms to work as absolute minimum critical need and this phone fails completely. The rest does not matter if these don’t work. I will be replacing in new year. I bought this on basis of positive feedback on e71, but this phone is a mess and I see many other people in online forums with the same problems as me.

  31. I love the E72…great business phone…Surfing my favorite pages is also a breeze with SNAPTU. I think it is the best for its price point. And the battery…well, it has the longest battery life among all the phones Ive had before. This is my first Qwerty phone and I can say I can type lightning two days into owning the E72…Much more comfortable to use than Blackberry.

  32. somebody plz help me!! im in a great confusion..i cant understand which phone to buy. I’m highly confused which phone to buy. E71 or E72 ?? plz suggest for me..

  33. Hi Guys! In Nokia E series…E72 is good mobile…since im in Mobile shop, did not get till now any much complaints or comments…you can go for E72…n now relised E7 too…if you want to know about performance just ask with your frinds or family…n go ahead*

  34. Dear all dont belive everything on blogs, changing thir name can type anything any1 also…so go with practical…belive the best 🙂

  35. Hello,
the phone is really a nice one. i want one and i m in ghana please tell me how to nokia e72

  36. Hi Everyone

I have had my E72 for about 1 year now, admittedly I have dropped it a few times, however I must agree with most of the positive and negative comments on this blog. My biggest frustration is that when I put a memory card (any) into the phone. the OS freezes. The E72 is chasis is sturdy and well built. It sometimes misses letters in texts and is a little slow for my fast typing.

Overall an okay phone not what I was expecting
